Top 7 biggest investment banking disruption of 2021

This year, or to be precise, its first quarter, was really “fruitful” in terms of disruptions. As their reasons could vary from trends to individual (or corporate) successes or major failures, Disruption Banking has decided to form a list of the 7 most influential ones of 2021 (so far).

1. The vaccine rollout and the pandemic itself

And even after a year of pandemic, we still haven’t recovered from its effect. We’re getting closer and closer - but we’re not quite there yet. There are ways to do so, but they require time.

2. Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The sustainable agenda has been boosted by the change on the U.S. presidential seat, as more focus is now being put on the social responsibility of institutions. This thoroughly influences the economies and finances too. Larry Fink has already stressed the need to invest $50 trillion to obtain a net-zero world.

3. Walstreetbets

The case of GameStop clearly shows the power of society - when influencers encouraged online communities to buy the stock, the masses were able to use the blind spot in most investment strategies. It started in 2020 but continued up until the first months of 2021.

4. Bitcoin

The craziness started in February when Tesla decided to buy $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin. Its price skyrocketed and is still peaking, as Citi’s March Report described the cryptocurrency’s shift and becoming attractive for bigger, institutionalized investors.

5. Brexit

The first day of New Year brought a new European Union - without the United Kingdom. London seems to be losing more and more, as the companies would relocate out of the city (and the country), and the banks started to shift balance sheet items to Germany.
